Devoted Man, Devoted Mother-Stephanie Munch

Devoted Man, Devoted Mother

In Giovanni Boccaccio’s piece of Middle Age literature, “Fedrigo’s Falcon”, he expresses the theme of devotion in the same way that Domenico Veneziano does in his piece of artwork, Madonna and Child. Boccaccio shows devotion in “Fedreigo’s Falcon” through the main character, Fedrigo. He is devoted to a recently widowed woman, Monna, and proves his devotion to her when he makes his Falcon into dinner for her. His Falcon meant everything to him, but Monna meant more. Monna needed the Falcon to make her son better but then realized that since Fedrigo had made it into her dinner that his love was much greater than the need for the bird. The way Fedrigo shows devotion to Monna would be similar to that of a mother to a child. A mother gives her child everything it needs even if it is hard for the mother to get ahold of. In the painting by Veneziano, Madonna, the mother, is holding her young child close to her body as if protecting him, showing devotion to him. Throughout both the literary work and the painting, devotion is showed intensely with love mixed in. Boccaccio and Veneziano both portray excellent examples of devotion through their Middle Age pieces.

  1. Good job finding a piece of artwork that I believe accurately fits, and relates to, the theme of the story. I think you picked a good theme that really stood out in "Federigo's Falcon". The fact that he was so devoted to one thing in his life, that he sacrificed another significant object, shows how big this theme was to the story. I think that if the author could have picked a picture to go on his title page, this would have been it. I think that a point to add to your theme is the devotion that Monna had to her son and how she would have done anything to get it for him. Also, from her devotion to her son, she gains a life long love for Federigo.

  2. Stephanie Munch,

Very good. I thought it looked like you spend a lot of time on this. I can see your theme very clear, because you carried it all the way through your paper. The picture really helped me understand the story more, because of how you explained. I thought the way you took the theme was really interesting because I didn’t even think of that, so I think it is cool how different we can take this and both still make complete sense with the story. The picture made complete sense with the theme you chose from “Federigo’s Falcon.” It is also very clear that you understand the story, which is very good.

    Payton.
